Reading a spec sheet
The clear layer on top. It is the only part of the floor that takes wear, measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch. Entry vinyl runs 6 to 12 mil. Every collection in the Alana range is 20 mil. Foundation, the entry line, is 12 mil.
What you actually stand on, pad included. Our 8 mm collections are a 6.5 mm board with a 1.5 mm pad already bonded to the underside. Most brands quote it this same way, so 8 mm here and 8 mm elsewhere are usually comparing like for like. Worth confirming either way, because a few quote the board alone and the difference shows up at your door transitions.
The foam bonded to the underside. It handles sound and small subfloor variation. Standard is 1.5 mm across the range.
How the planks join. Unilin is a licensed system with real patents behind it and it is what most premium floors use. Generic clones exist, and they are the usual reason a floor separates at the seams two years in.
